10 REQUIREMENTS FOR A FOOTBALL COACH

  1. Love youth and enjoy working with kids
  2. Know the players you train
  3. Be a guide and a manager that sets the rules but also encourages initiatives and questions from the players
  4. Be demanding in terms of the objectives and the execution of exercises, yet tolerant and flexible to adapt to each kid’s capabilities
  5. Listen, pay attention, be available
  6. Foster real communication with all players
  7. Define an area and level of freedom with the players
  8. Be in phase with the kids: put yourself at their level, encourage the development of a coach-player complicity
  9. Give confidence, encourage, reassure
  10. Assert your authority yet use positive pedagogy at all times

DO’S AND DONT’S

  1. Don’t shout
  2. Don’t touch the children
  3. Don’t expect them to train and play as adults
  4. Don’t stay too long on the same exercise or theme game
  5. Don’t do long presentation or interrupt constantly the training
  6. Don’t criticize the player in front of the group
  7. Do enforce strict discipline and respect of the Academy’s key rules (punctuality, outfit, instructions)
  8. Do keep the game interesting = don’t let the score gap grow during a game (2 goals max)
