Uruguay head for Confederations Cup semis after thrashing Tahiti

Abel Hernandez showcased his scoring prowess by securing four goals as Uruguay’s second-string team triumphed 8-0 against Tahiti on Sunday. This victory propelled the South Americans into a Confederations Cup semi-final clash with Brazil, while simultaneously bringing Tahiti’s campaign to an end after enduring a third consecutive heavy defeat.

Uruguay wasted no time, taking less than two minutes to open the scoring as Hernandez rose unmarked to head in from a Nicolas Lodeiro corner. Hernandez continued his scoring spree, sprinting past a static defense to volley past goalkeeper Gilbert Meriel in the 24th minute, adding a second goal. Diego Perez contributed a third three minutes later, capitalizing on an open goal after his own header rebounded off the post.

Hernandez secured his hat-trick and Uruguay’s fourth just before halftime, skillfully evading the offside trap and slotting home from an angle. In the 61st minute, Uruguay extended their lead when Lodeiro converted Walter Gargano’s cross from close range. Hernandez completed his impressive performance by netting a penalty in the 67th minute, while substitute Luis Suarez sealed the comprehensive victory with goals in the 81st and 89th minutes.
